ATMs and debit cards: Your personal safety
Banking Center

Bank customers should always use common sense when using an ATM. These tips are a start, but the best advice is to simply not use the teller machine if you feel at all uncomfortable doing so.

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you observe or sense suspicious people or circumstances, do not use the machine at that time.
  • Have your ATM card in hand as you approach the machine. Don't wait to get there and then fumble around in your purse or wallet for the card. Have deposit slips handy and filled out before you reach the ATM.
  • Be careful that no one can see you entering your PIN. Use your body to shield the keypad as you enter your number.
  • Do not count or visually display any money you just received from the ATM. Put your money into your purse or pocket and count it later in a safe place.
  • If you are using a drive-up ATM, be sure that passenger windows are rolled up and all doors are locked.
  • Don't accept help from strangers while using the machine. If you have a problem, contact the bank.
  • Report all crimes to the local ATM owner and local law enforcement agency immediately.

Using an ATM at night

  • Park close to the ATM in a well-lighted area.
  • Take another person with you if possible.
  • If the lights on an ATM are not working, don't use it.
  • If shrubbery is overgrown or a tree blocks the view, select another ATM and notify your bank.
